Doctrine of Imminence


If you knew you only had days to live would you not call out to GOD?
In the very same way,
If you really believed Jesus was coming tomorrow, what would your attitude be? What would you DO ???

Belief in Jesus soon return leads to Holiness !! Being set apart from this world.. Set apart for Jesus use...

All throughout the Church age, faithful witnesses have longingly gazed up into the heavens hoping that Jesus coming would be in their day... The apostle Paul thought that Jesus might come back in his day, since the gospel had already gone throughout the world--- His world,, the Roman empire of his time...

But Paul did not realize that Jesus meant all of planet Earth.. Even though in hind sight through the efficatcy of the Holy Spirit we can now see that it is plainly written in scripture that Jesus would not come back for another 1900 years, It was still hidden from them.. However, this doctrine comforted the believers.. Through their faith, they worked wonders in the power of GOD...


1st Thessalonians 1:10--- expresses hope and a warm spirit of expectantcy

To serve the living and true God: and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.



1 John 3:2,3 Results in a victorious spirit and a purified live living in Holyness

1John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

1Jo 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.



iv. We shall be like Him: This reminds us that even though we grow into the image of Jesus now, we still have a long way to go. None of us will be finished until we see Jesus, and only then truly we shall be like Him.

 d. We shall see Him as He is: Perhaps this is the greatest glory of heaven: not to be personally glorified, but to be in the unhindered, unrestricted, presence of our Lord.

 1 Corinthians 13:12). . Paul said of our present walk, For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known ( Today, when we look in a good mirror, the image is clear. But in the ancient world, mirrors were made out of polished metal, and the image was always unclear and somewhat distorted. We see Jesus now only in a dim, unclear way, but one day we will see Him with perfect clarity.


 

1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 Paul included himself as among those looking for Jesus return Also 2 Thess 2:11

1Th 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

1Th 4:17 Then we which are alive [and] remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

1Th 4:18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.



c. And thus we shall always be with the Lord: The manner in which Jesus will gather us to Himself is impressive. But the main point is that whatever the state of the Christians (dead or alive) at the Lord's coming, they will always be with the Lord. This is the great reward of heaven - to be with Jesus. Death can't break our unity with Jesus or with other Christians.

 

i. We shall always be with the Lord is an important truth with many implications.

 

·        It implies continuation because it assumes you are already with the Lord.

·        It implies hope for the dying because in death we shall still be with the Lord.

·        It implies future confidence because after death we are with the Lord.

·        It implies advancement because we will one day always be with the Lord.


1 Timothy 6:14 That thou keep [this] commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ


For when we keep focused upon Jesus, this present world fades away.


Hebrews 10:17

For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.


Luke 19:13

And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.



i. Some gifts are distributed differently by God, according to His own pleasure; others are universally given to believers - such as the gospel, which is given to each Christian in equal measure.

ii. Delivered to them ten minas: It isn’t that each servant received ten minas, but that ten were distributed to the group as a whole, one to each of the ten servants.

b. Do business till I come: While the master was away, receiving his kingdom, the servants were expected to do business - to use the resources that the master gave, and to use them to the utmost.

 

James 5:8 Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.


Matthew 24:42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

Mat 24:43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.

Mat 24:44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.


Mat 25:13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.


Act 1:7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.


Rev 3:3 If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

d. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief: Jesus warned them of the great danger in failing to watch. If they ignored His command to be watchful, then Jesus would come upon them as a thief, at a time completely unexpected.

 

i. I will come upon you: How would Jesus come upon them? He could come in the sense bringing immediate judgment. Or, He could come in the sense of His coming at the rapture of the church (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). Used in either sense, it showed He might come suddenly and unannounced, so they must  be watchful.


So If We Do watch-- we will not be surprised !!!!!


1Th 5:4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

1Th 5:5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

1Th 5:6 Therefore let us not sleep, as [do] others; but let us watch and be sober.

2. (4-5) The basis for Paul's exhortations

 

a. But you, brethren, are not in darkness: In addressing their behavior, Paul first simply told the Thessalonian Christians that they should be who they are. God has made us sons of the light and sons of the day. The time when we were of the night or of the darkness is in the past. So now we simply have to live up to what God has made us.

 i. "In the Semitic languages generally to be a 'son' of something means to be characterized by that thing." (Morris)

 b. That this Day should over take you as a thief: Paul means that this should not happen for the believer who lives according to their nature as a son of light and son of the day. They will be ready for the return of Jesus Christ.

 i. "Paul is led from a consideration of the day of the Lord to the thought that the Thessalonians have nothing to fear from the coming of that Day. This leads to the further thought that their lives should be in harmony with all that that day stands for." (Morris)

 ii. In some respect, the coming of Jesus will be a surprise for everybody, because no one knows the day or the hour (Matthew 24:36). But for Christians who know the times and the seasons, it will not be a complete surprise. No one knows the exact hour a thief will come, but some live in a general preparation against thieves. Those who are not in darkness, who live as they are all sons of light and sons of the day, these are ready for the return of Jesus.

 

iii. But if we are in darkness - perhaps caught up in some of the sin Paul warned against previously in this letter - then we are not ready, and need to make ourselves ready for the return of Jesus.

 

3. (6-8) Paul's exhortations: be awake, sober, and watchful.

 

Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.

 

a. Therefore let us not sleep: Because we do not belong to the night nor of darkness (1 Thessalonians 5:5), our spiritual condition should never be marked by sleep. Spiritually speaking, we need to be active and aware, to watch and be sober.

 

i. Not sleep: Paul used a different word here than for the sleep of death mentioned in 1 Thessalonians 4:13. "The word sleep is here used metaphorically to denote indifference to spiritual realities on the part of believers. It is a different word than that in 4:13-15 for the sleep of death. It covers all sorts of moral and spiritual laxity or insensibility." (Hiebert)

 

ii. Sleep speaks of so much that belongs to the world (the others), but should not belong to Christians:

I greet people in my large church with the words “Jesus is coming”. They smile – and/or are politely impatient-, then hurry away... After all, I've told them this before. However, they seem to miss the whole point ...Recently, I asked one delightful brother “why do I say Jesus is coming?”

His answer was “I dont know” looking at me... So I answered “Because He IS coming very soon”

All I got was a smile, and he went off to talk with someone else...


It seems we are continually met with a spirit of apathy and a lack of understanding about the times in which we live. Despite all the things going on in the world today, the sense of urgency about the hour seemes lost .


Sometimes, I find myself really wanting to grab them by both sholders, shake them and screem in their faces “wake up ! He is coming! Soon! Really soon!” What are you susposed to be doing about it?”

How are you susposed to be living your life?”


After all, they have children and then grandchildren they want to watch growing up, a football season they want to see, retirement plans they dont want to miss... In the minds of most all believers,

they have a vague knowledge that Jesus could come back today, but they put the possibility of His coming on the top shelf of their closet because they really dont want Him to come back any time soon... because then that would mess up all their plans for the future...


The large church I have been a member of for 30 years is spending three million dollars on a sanctuary remodel... A remodel facelift! 3 million! I shake my head in disbelief! I think I am the only person appauled by this waste! Think of how many Bibles could have been bought, how many missionaries could have been blessed by even half of that sum... Two million of what we spent was actually in CASH! And cost overuns will reach another 200 thousand $$$...

The “Its all about ME” doctrine has led the church away from its true purpose, saving souls... going out into the highway and hedges and compelling people to come in to GODs house


And Doctrine- dont even let me get started about doctrine! And wanna-be- Bibles...Most churches are disappearing down the “purpose driven rabbit hole of consummer led theology... theology so called, appealing to the lust of the masses instead of preaching the true WORD of the ages, given to us by our Redeemer and Lord...


Finally, The doctrine of imminence has us watch, praying, faithfully working to reach the lost in the final moments of this age before Jesus calls us home to glory.


We are faithful because we are his, and as faithful sons, we long to hear our masters voice

His words, “Well done thou good and faithful servant. Enter into the Joy of your Lord...

Are You Weeping beside the Rivers of Babylon?



  • Psalm 137

Psa 137:1 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.

Psa 137:2 We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.

Psa 137:3 For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us [required of us] mirth, [saying], Sing us [one] of the songs of Zion.

Psa 137:4 How shall we sing the LORD'S song in a strange land?

Psa 137:5 If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget [her cunning].

Psa 137:6 If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.

Psa 137:7 Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase [it], rase [it, even] to the foundation thereof.

Psa 137:8 O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy [shall he be], that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us.

Psa 137:9 Happy [shall he be], that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.


How often do we find ourselves weeping by the rivers of Babylon?

Wether from chastizement for our bad choices OR just from this evil world?



Zec 2:8 For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.


Our GOD cherishes His people... after the 10 northern tribes of Israel were taken away captive to Assyria, GOD heard their weeping and destroyed their tormentors

Nahum 1:1 The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.

Nah 1:2 God [is] jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and [is] furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth [wrath] for his enemies.

Nah 1:3 The LORD [is] slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit [the wicked]: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds [are] the dust of his feet.


Nah 2:1 He that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face: keep the munition, watch the way, make [thy] loins strong, fortify [thy] power mightily.

Nah 2:2 For the LORD hath turned away the excellency of Jacob, as the excellency of Israel: for the emptiers have emptied them out, and marred their vine branches.

>>>>a. The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: Nahum begins his prophecy by considering the character of the God who brings judgment.

 

·        God is jealous: How can it be said that God is jealous?  “God’s jealousy is love in action. God is not jealous of us: He is jealous for us.”

 

·        The Lord will take vengeance on His adversaries: Man needs to understand that he can’t fight against God and hope to prevail. Everyone who sets themselves against God will end up receiving His vengeance.

 

·        The Lord is slow to anger: God is far more patient than man. Though there is a time and place where He does display His anger, it doesn’t come quickly or capriciously. “God’s sword of justice is in its scabbard: not rusted in it - it can be easily withdrawn - but held there by that hand that presses it back into its sheath, crying, ‘Sleep, O sword, sleep; for I will have mercy upon sinners, and will forgive their transgressions.’” (Spurgeon)

 

·        And great in power: Knowing God’s power should make us trust in His help (because He is able to help) and to fear His judgment (knowing that He judges with power).

 

·        Will not at all acquit the wicked: God is not like an unjust judge who simply lets the guilty go out of a false sense of compassion. We can’t just figure that God will say, “Let’s let bygones be bygones” when we get to heaven. Sin must be accounted for, because He will not acquit the wicked. Every sin will be paid for - either in hell or at the cross - but God will not acquit the wicked.

 

·        The Lord has His way in the whirlwind and in the storm: God’s power is so great that it controls the mightiest forces known to man. A huge whirlwind or storm is nothing to God, because He has His way in them.

 

·        His fury is poured out like fire: When God is resisted long enough and rejected strongly enough, eventually His judgment comes. He is slow to anger, but when it does come His fury is poured out like fire. Understanding this should make man quick to repent and wary of presuming on God’s patience.

 

·        The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble: Those who love Him and trust Him see the goodness of God, and find protection in His stronghold -

·        He knows those who trust in Him: Not only does He know them in the sense of identification, but also in the sense of relationship. Trust implies relationship, and God knows those who trust in Him.


For mighty Ninevah was besieged by those who they had terrified... They snickered at their enemies from behind their tall proud walls, the works of their hands...

However the Mighty GOD brought forth a flood, an overflowing rain... HE caused the river of Nineveh to betray her city, breach her proud walls, drowning much of her people in a tsunami of mud and water...leaving her bare, naked to their enemies



Nah 2:3 The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men [are] in scarlet: the chariots [shall be] with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken.

Nah 2:4 The chariots shall rage in the streets, they shall jostle one against another in the broad ways: they shall seem like torches, they shall run like the lightnings.


Btw, Nahum may have also seen our 8 lane highways


The king of Nineveh, being afraid of abuse at the hands of his enemies,

torched his palace, his family, and entered an eternal torment far worse than the Earthly fire that consumed him...





A generation later, Jerusalem and Judah were taken captive

And God heard their weeping by the rivers of Babylon...


And after the Land had rested 70 years, GOD delivered the next generation much as HE had done after the 40 years wandering with Moses in the wilderness...

2Ch 36:21 To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: [for] as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.


Israel had refused to let the Farmland rest, to lay fallow every seventh year

--hense, GODs judgment of 70 years.........


For GOD promises:


Deuteronomy 32:10 GOD found Israel in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; GOD led him about, GOD instructed him, GOD kept him as the apple of his eye.


GOD is their for us in Our wilderness...

Psa 23:1 <A Psalm of David.> The LORD [is] my shepherd; I shall not want.

Psa 23:2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

Psa 23:3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Psa 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou [art] with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Psa 23:5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Psa 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.


God promises to deliever us—sometimes from our pain, more often THROUGH our pain...

Zec 13:8 And it shall come to pass, [that] in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off [and] die; but the third shall be left therein.

Zec 13:9 And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It [is] my people: and they shall say, The LORD [is] my God.


For then Israel was delivered by the King...


2Ch 36:22 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD [spoken] by the mouth of Jeremiah (the Prophet) might be accomplished, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and [put it] also in writing, saying,

2Ch 36:23 Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which [is] in Judah. Who [is there] among you of all his people? The LORD his God [be] with him, and let him go up.

This was A pagan king who GOD had shown Himself to...


GOD delivers us much as HE delivered Judah

For GOD delivers His people:

Hosea 6:1 Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.

Hos 6:2 After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.


Primarially meaning Israel to be dispersed for 2000 years in the World, then raised up in the Millennial; Kingdom--


however by illustration for US... GOD Will chastize us, His children, to repentance, then He will bring Us back to Him...


>>>GOD only spanks HIS children... He lets the wicked alone until their time...

>>>. He has torn, but He will heal us: Hosea prays with the right heart in response to the chastening hand of God. Instead of arguing with God, or resenting His correction, Hosea leads Israel in humble prayer.

 

i. This is a prayer that trusts the love of God, and sees His loving hand even in correction. Often, a rebellious child will complain that their parents do not love them. Of course, the parents do love the child, but in their rebellion and lack of submission, they can’t receive or respond to that love. Hosea prays with a different heart.

 

b. After two days He will revive us; on the third day He will raise us up: Hosea prayed this full of confidence in God’s love and power to restore. In the prayer, there is a shadowy prophecy of Jesus’ resurrection on the third day. The context supports this wonderfully; on the cross Jesus was torn and stricken for our sake, yet He was also gloriously raised up on the third day.


Psa 37:35 I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree.

Psa 37:36 Yet he passed away, and, lo, he [was] not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.


Anon: Man is like the morning mist, is there for a short time, making a brief noise, then forever quenched by the rising sun.


Psa 73:3 For I was envious at the foolish, [when] I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

Psa 73:4 For [there are] no bands in their death: but their strength [is] firm.

Psa 73:5 They [are] not in trouble [as other] men; neither are they plagued like [other] men.

Psa 73:6 Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them [as] a garment.

Psa 73:7 Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.

Psa 73:8 They are corrupt, and speak wickedly [concerning] oppression: they speak loftily.

Psa 73:9 They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.

-----The “Game” of thrones----- wicked rulers shed blood---

Psa 73:17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God; [then] understood I their end.


However, We have a coming King and We Have a city...


Zec 14:1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.

Zec 14:2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

Zec 14:3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.

Zec 14:4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which [is] before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, [and there shall be] a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.


Zec 14:9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.

Deu 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God [is] one LORD:

Deu 6:5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Deu 6:6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

Deu 6:7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Deu 6:8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

Deu 6:9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

Rev 22:3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:

Rev 22:4 And they shall see his face; and his name [shall be] in their foreheads.

Rev 22:5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

Rev 22:6 And he said unto me, These sayings [are] faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.

Rev 22:7 Behold, I come quickly: blessed [is] he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.



Rev 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward [is] with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

Rev 22:13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

Rev 22:14 Blessed [are] they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

Rev 22:16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. ((Rev 3&4)) I am the root and the offspring of David, [and] the bright and morning star.

Rev 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

Rev 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

Rev 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book.

Rev 22:20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

Rev 22:21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [be] with you all. Amen.


Once saved we are now different

the things of this world are fading away...we find that the toys the adventures the worldly pursuits that were once even all consuming no longer fascinate us...in a way, we now have glasses that can focus only on the kingdom in the distance while the worldly things around us become so very blurred fuzzy transient UN-important...and yes unsatisfying...

I have been noticing it more often recently...maybe that means that my/our homecoming is even more imminent... that the veil between this world and the next is thinning to the point where we can feel the ghostly whispers from the other side....


Even so, Come Quickly Lord Jesus... and, oh,BTW Lord, coming soon would be good too!!
